Biography

Experience & Expertise

Dr. Amato is a board-certified surgeon with full training in plastic and reconstructive surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and cleft and craniofacial surgery. The son of an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who was himself a pioneer in orthognathic and reconstructive jaw surgery, Dr. Amato grew up with a deep appreciation for the impact that skilled surgical care has on a patient’s life. He serves as director of the New Jersey Institute for Craniofacial Surgery at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and as a clinical professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

He earned his dental degree at Columbia University and his medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where he completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency and several years of general surgery training. He then completed his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Cooper University Hospital in New Jersey, which included significant craniofacial experience at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

He went on to complete the prestigious Posnick Craniomaxillofacial Surgery Fellowship, training under Dr. Jeffrey Posnick, one of the world’s foremost authorities in craniofacial and orthognathic surgery, and Dr. Paul Gavaris, a leader in oculoplastic surgery. The combination of these disciplines represents a level of surgical training that very few surgeons in the country possess, and one that directly benefits every patient Dr. Amato treats.

Known for his calm confidence and genuine warmth with patients, Dr. Amato has lectured nationally and co-authored surgical textbook chapters on orthognathic, cleft, and craniofacial surgery and brings a rare depth of training and experience to every case he treats.

“The surgery lasts a few hours. The impact lasts a lifetime.

Dr. Jeffrey Posnick

Dr. Jeffrey C. Posnick, DMD, MD is one of the most influential figures in the history of craniofacial and orthognathic surgery. Educated at Harvard and Vanderbilt, he trained at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, directed the craniofacial program at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, and founded the Georgetown Craniofacial Center. His two landmark textbooks, Craniofacial and Maxillofacial Surgery in Children and Young Adults and Orthognathic Surgery: Principles and Practice, are widely regarded as definitive references in the field.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Posnick has trained and mentored many of the field’s leading surgeons. His enduring impact on both surgical technique and education has helped define modern craniofacial and orthognathic surgery, and continues to influence care worldwide.

Dr. Amato completed his craniofacial fellowship under Dr. Posnick’s direct mentorship, gaining firsthand experience in the advanced surgical techniques and treatment philosophies that have defined modern craniofacial and orthognathic surgery.

Passion & Purpose

Dr. John Amato, DDS, MD, MBA, during an interview

For Dr. Amato, the path to facial surgery was shaped by the surgeon he watched most closely growing up, his father, a pioneer in orthognathic and reconstructive jaw surgery. That early influence did more than inspire a career choice. It instilled a standard of excellence and a depth of commitment to patients that has defined everything Dr. Amato has built since.

That commitment drove him to pursue one of the most comprehensive surgical training backgrounds in the country, spanning oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, craniofacial surgery, and oculoplastic surgery. Rather than broad surgical practice, he made a deliberate choice to dedicate his career exclusively to surgery of the face, bringing the full weight of that training to bear on every patient he treats.

Among all the conditions he cares for, cleft and craniofacial surgery holds a special place, not because he approaches it differently, but because of the profound impact it has on the lives of the patients and families he serves. For Dr. Amato, the privilege of doing this work, and the difference it makes in a patient’s life, remains his greatest passion and reward.
